Oxid vs. Magento: New Open Source Systems in Comparison

Update: The slides are available in English now

Björn Schotte from the IT consultancy firm Mayflower has compared the commercial open source solutions from Oxid, Magento and xt-Commerce head-to-head and has recently published his results at the E-Commerce Conference:

His estimations coincide much of that of other experts: Magento has an impressive developer community, but is in some ways sloppily programmed and suffers from disadvantages in performance.

Oxid for it’s part, is trailing in terms of developer community.

All of these factors, however, could be in essence attributed to the fact that both open source solutions are comparatively fresh on the market. Magento barely started 15 months ago and Oxid opened up its Community Edition just last Fall.

With these developments, it’s the first time that the e-commerce market has access to serious open source alternatives instead of labour intensive tailor-made solutions. When looking at overall cost (TCO for development and operational costs), Mayflower favours Oxid over Magento and xt-Commerce for the German market.
